How NOT to load an antique tractor

I read that complete article and only have two things to say:

1) Its very easy to bend an axle with that much mass and rotational interia. I'm surprised at lack of damage otherwise.

2) Just because the the guy driving was nicknamed Crash, doesn't mean we all are poor operators. Some of us have outgrown our destructive ways!

One more bit of advice when loading any tractor without a ROPS, back up onto the trailer, as is shown in Paul's great photos.

A few years back at our county fair, a guy was killed while trying to drive a tractor up a steep loading ramp. It did a wheelie, and he was crushed when it flipped over backwards on top of him. Surely, a roll bar, and a seat belt would have saved him.

My goodness, how in the world did we survive?? All my fathers neighbors who farmed, are now dieing of old age. I watched them load tractors on some very scary trucks....Now we get LONG discussions on how to be safe, with advice that we normally gave to third and fourth graders.

Don't mean to negate or make fun of the "safety" issue....but honestly I do get rather annoyed when these "safety instructors" treat us all like we are grade school kids.....wipe your nose, remember to go to the bathroom, use a hanky, etc, etc.

No harm in discussing things, safety included. ;)

I tend to agree... ( with a few exceptions to the people that are really 'asking for it" ).

When i bought my 1950 JD B trike, the guy that showed up with it, had it on a semi flatbed trailer.. it had only 2 steep ramps in the back.. I thought maybee it was a drop neck trailer.. but then i see the guy drop the 2 ramps in the rear... And then promptly watched him back the 2 rear wheels down the ? 60' ramps, and just as the front narrow wheels were coming to the edge of the trailer he steered them over hard right and brought them down the right side ramp... I was in awe... He noticed.. then said he pretty much only works on JD trikes.. and that's how he had always done them.. then he winked at me..

Cool move! Like watching a really good backhoe operator.

I like tilt bed trailers! Ramps scare me.

As far as talking safety. If you don't want to ready about safety issues, don't scan the Safety forum! (ok, sorry, just had to say it)

Really, the only difference is that your fathers neighbors didn't have the web to read. They did have each other and their fathers to show them how to do it safely and to yell at them when they were about to do something stupid.

I don't mind the occasional talking down to, as long as I get to learn at least one good thing from it. Mostly ;)

I always appreciate the guy who brings up a a scare or accident they had that was unavoidable or outside of the common sense realm. I forget which thread it was where a member, I think Riptide??, shared his story of a very nasty roll over that nearly killed him. There is nothing he did that was out of the ordinary.

On the other hand people do dumb things and proof of that is plastered all over the net. That and the nagging safety police can really get old after a while.
