A guy has a 6 ft flail with new blades. He bought it used in the 70s. Asking 500. Would you guys chance it on a flail this old?

I hope to purchase something around this age at auction on august 6th. Knives are the costly part so you are ahead there. Not much more to wear other than a rubber belt is there? This Equipment was made before everything was reduced or lightened to save money on materials, shipping costs and other accounting concerns. If it was used every day for 40 years it might be a different story. I need something that does not launch rocks like a bush hog.

Depending on your usage, I would.

I make my living so to speak with iron dating back to a 1939 JD sickle bar mower. I mow 20 acres of hay per year with that very mower hooked to a 1941 Farmall Tractor. Rake with a 60's International rake behind a 1953 Ford NAA. Bale with a early 60's New Holland Baler. All that equipment is from well established brands and parts are readily available, and really not too expensive. The 70's started to see imports so I would make sure there is a dealer handy that can get parts. Bearings will go, belts knives will need to be replaced, shafts wear, but if the price is right and you have the ability to maintain it go for it.

What make flail is it? I just bought one that dates somewhere between 1964-1972 it is a Ford, it had been sitting unused and the grease in a couple of the bearings had dried up so I had to purge the old grease out and put new grease in
I used it some and a couple of repairs are needed, I need one bearing on the roller, a new belt and one blade needs replaced, I priced the parts and they come to $167.50
If the flail has been being used some I believe that is better than just sitting, check out the bearings and the belt, if it has new blades you have saved money right there, it is worth the money for sure!
I will have about $400 in mine, along with my time and labor! Have you checked out the prices on a new unit? They can be very costly, a good used mower is money ahead!!

Definatally depends on the brand and model as well as its condition.

If it is a Mott/Alamo, and it is in good condition and the bearings are good, it is probabally a decient buy.

Can the guy demo it for you? See how it runs sounds. Look for abnormal vibrations and such. Them things spin fast.

But to put it into perspective, I bought a used Mott from the 60's for $100. Knowing it had a bad bearing and NO PTO. I replaced both cuttershaft bearings, and put a NEW PTO on it. Cleaned it up and a fresh paint job. $350 TOTAL invested and I sold it for $600. Even to older ones, IF in good shape, still bring some good money.
