Two days ago I checked the age of my Yanmar AF22 by reading the date stamped on ther rear rims : 08-92 (august 1992).

Then, changing the air filter element, I had a look inside the cover of the air filter case. I noticed the typical "clock logo", 5 millimeters wide, stamped on many industrial plastic parts. It has a 98 in his center, and the arrow indicate 9 (=September 1998).

As an air filter case is seldom changed during the life of a tractor, this seems to show that having a look into the air filter case maybe a more accurate way to estimate the age of a tractor than reading it on the rear rims.

Any opinion about this ?

That certainly seems quite logical. Wheels are probably not the BEST way to get a date since the same wheels can be used for several models over several years. Wheels can be changed, especially when the tractor was exported/imported, since they are removed for shipment. The air cleaner is less likely to be replaced, but still could be. The best way would be to determine when some of the main castings were cast - like the engine block, or better still the transmission/transaxle casing.
