Yanmar 336D
I finally got to try out my Yanmar 336D. Should you be able to stop the tractor in first gear when it's moving at low idle. Mine didn't have any effect. But there is some braking when I shift the shuttle shift to neutral and use the brake before it comes to a complete stop.

Tractor brakes are for slowing you down / stopping you, after you stomp the clutch.

I've never seen a set of tractor brakes that would stop a tractor in gear at any engine speed, including idle. .. That goes fro brand new tractors.. and brand new brakes.. and worn out tractors with weak clutches and new brakes.

You will find many MANY stores here of people 'load testing' their parking brakes on their tractors.

My 7610s tractor will back right out from under it's shade canopy with a JD 1517 15' batwing mower on the back of it, in idle/reverse/low gear, witht he brakes locked to the deck plate... engine hardle notices it.

These same brakes will make the tires lock on sod if I dump the clutch and stand on them.. so the brakes are GOOD.. tractor engine / gear ratios are just too strong usually to stop the crank from turning.

An exception would be very low rpm, and very high gears, and brakes locked... For instance.. i don't think I could take off in 8th gear at idle if my brakes were locked.. it would smoke and load up and let me know something was wrong..

HST tranny tractor -MAY- be able to be stopped by their brakes.. maybee not.. I've heard both from owners.. all depends on the circumstances..

( FYI.. my yanmar 1700 will drive right thru it's brakes no problem.. yet those brakes will also make those rice tires lock up in a pasture if yo stomp them.. so again.. good breaks don't equall a good engine.. )

My hst will not move from rest with the brake set. The hydro just hollers at me that I'm and idiot and should let the brake off. :)

The brake will slow it down, but again, with a Case hst, you pretty much don't hit the brake without taking your foot off the hst pedal, which slows you down right now without the brake.

I've forgotten and left my parking brake set a few (ok, maybe more than a few) times and my 'bota 4630 really didn't notice the brakes being there when I pushed down on the hst.

I also left the park brake on and heard this weird noise coming from the tractor once I started moving in first gear. Didn't slow me down either. I thought I had a problem with the trans, then remembered I left the park brake on. I guess I will take the brake cover off and exam them when I get the chance. Thanks for the information.

Probably didn't hurt them.. most tractor brakes i see are real meaty.. and .. can last decades.. easy... remember.. they don't get used alot like on an automobile.. I've 'power-braked' accidentially on my tractors plenty of times with no ill effects... ;)

I can stall my Mahindra 7520 at idle in 2nd but not 1st. This is putting an estimated 300 pounds on the brake pedals - as hard as I can push holding myself down with the steering wheel. I wish the brakes were more powerful. They require too much pressure on steep inclines with tires and loader loaded. Could be theyre not fully seated in yet since the tractor only has about 400hrs.

my 45 notices the breaks like you notice stepping on an ant. high 1 i figured out the breaks were on by noticing the parking breaks were still set when i went to turn the blower half way through the drive. if you seperate them and use them to steer they work well or when the clutch is in. if the engine is engaged they dont do any thing even at idle

Yeah, tractor brakes are not for stopping you when there is power being applied by the engine!

On an HST you can hear the "whine" change pitch a bit, but on a gear tractor you may smell the smoke first! Unless you have wet brakes...

John Bud, aren't most all tractor brakes "wet brakes"?
