Trying to locate instructions on adjusting the PTO clutch for a friend's 1920. He does not have an owner's manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

have you adjusted clutch free play?

PS.. how about tell us what problems he's having and why you are focusing on the pto section of the clutch.

Is the pto section NOT disengaging?

Is it Slipping?

How many hours on this clutch? or the machine itself.

clutch may be worn past useability if the freeplay is adjusted correctly and you still have engagement issues, aside from 'stuck from setting' issues.

Soundguy..the PTO grinds when engaging. Someone else stated the PTO clutch may need to be adjusted. Friend has no idea how many hours on the tractor but looks like it has been used hard. He purchased it used. Without a manual I am not how much free play is appropriate. I plan to reduce clutch pedal free play and see if the improves PTO engagement.

no proofmeter? or non working?

anywho.. here is a test. with it turned off, attach a pto load, now start her up while holding the clutch down.. pto spin while you have the clutch pressed down?

And is the clutch , floorboard, pto pedal limit engaged? IE.. with a 2 stage clutch, the first stage is the drivetrain.. so pressing the clutch about half way stops the tractor from rolling, but leaves the pto going... pressing clutch the rest of the way, should stop the pto. Now.. to make mowing and other pto tasks easier, there was a lockout so that you could set it so that stepping on the clutch pedal only let it travel that half way. IE. if for mowing, and you wanted to leave the mower running so you could stop and backup.

make sure that is not set, and you are not just short strokig the clutch pedal.

Thanks for the instruction! I will not be able to run these tests/checks until the weekend.

Just to clarify.."attach a pto load"..are you saying to attach an implement that uses the pto and then check to see if the bush hog turns with the clutch pedal depressed?
I had the bush hog attached last Sat. and the shaft that attaches to the pto was not turning when the tractor was running.

Not sure what the "pto pedal limit" is but will look for that and confirm it has not been accidentally engaged.

Pardon my ignorance but what is a proofmeter?

Thanks again Soundguy!

proofmeter is the hourmeter/tachometer.

the pedal limit is simple and mechanical, slides out prevents pedal travel too far.

and yeah.. have pto engaged, and a load like a mower attached, and clutch pressed.. see if it spins.

Removing some of the clutch pedal free play solved the PTO engagement issue. I can now engage the PTO without ANY grinding! I love simple fixes. Thanks for everyone's feedback.

Clutch pedal free travel should be 3/4" - 1 3/16". There's also a rubber cover on the side of the clutch housing. Inside there are three bolts with lock-nuts affixed to the PTO pressure plate. (can't miss 'em) Adjust so that those bolt heads are .035-.040" (~1mm) from contacting the near surface ('outer clutch cover'). This is to sync the PTO and transmission clutches (dual plate) and may not require readjusting pedal free travel, once checked.

btw, If your friend has kids, they could buy him I&T's FO-46 manual (all 20-series Shibaura/NHs) for Fathers' Day (~$30). There isn't much it doesn't cover, and you'd both be glad he has it :) tog

Free play is now at 1". Thanks for the info on the PTO clutch adjustment/tolerances and the manual recommendation. I will check into that next weekend.
