I'm considering having my buddys dad build me a 5 foot wide disk for my JD 2520. I'd like it to raise and lower with the 3 point arms, so not just a pull behind one on a hitch.
Any suggestions, or ideas I should pass by him before he builds it? He's into building all kinds of stuff, so it won't be a problem for him, but I'm sure he'll want some dimensions and stuff.....so is 5 foot about right for my 2520?

Should he build the disks so they are offset, and have the front set throw the dirt in and the back ones throw it out?

I'm just looking for suggestions right now!
Thanks :D

Not to discourage you.. but I'm almost certain it will be cheaper to purchase one.. than to build one.. unless the supplies are already on hand and cheap or free.

If you want a good design, don't reinvent the wheel.. look at other manufacturers that have already done the engineering work for you and copy their design. Download pics from KK and howse ont he internet.. or hit a tsc store and bring home a paper flier that shows the disc' harrow pics on there.

If you build it.. make it repairable using standard off the shelf supplies like bearings and cutter wheels... otherwise yuo will always be scrambling to find odd parts..

If it were me.. this would be a checkbook/credit card type of item...not a torch & welder type of item.. IMHO..

I agree with Soundguy, better a good copy than a poorly self designed ;)

I think I would save the favor and go buy a premade one, as was suggested.

My buddys dad builds everything from drags, to plows, etc.....
He works for cheap and builds things stronger than most things you can buy. He also has a bunch of old farm implements laying around that he can borrow ideas, and pieces from and build it easily. I'll ask him and see what he thinks, but I just hate buying things that aren't built really well.
Maybe there are nice ones out there.

I built a five footer last year, here is the link to it. I used Agri-supply to provide the disk, bearings, axles and my local metal suplier for the metal, I took my time with it and spread the cost out over several months.
I more than likely could have purchased new for equal or cheaper but it would not have been near as fun:)

I would suggest a swivel top link like on a rear finish mower or something simular so the disk can follow the terrain better.

Yes, most implements i build, are stronger than stuff you buy cheap from Poland. But still, their general design is a good guideline, but then build yours stronger :)
