Does anyone have anyideal how to build a speader that would be powered by the wheel speed. I have thought about building one that goes on the 3point hitch and is powered by the pto but had i ideal that i could build on on a minature trailer (like a manure spreader) that is chain driven from the axel. I would like to make it so it spreads rock salt for ice in the winter and can also pull it behind me in the foodplots and spread fertilizer. I would think the trailer would be better than the hitch becuase i could also pull it behind a four wheeler. Here is the link to one i found one the internet that is close to what i want. 800 dollars seems high, i think i can make one for cheaper.

I saw on fair small, pull type spreader.
You can saw it here .

You need to find one of the old wheel drive fertilizer spreaders and adapt it for the salt. The wheels drove the agitator/auger, which fed the fertilizer into the bottom of the spreader where it fell out through the holes in the bottom of the spreader.

My thoughts;

Any rear end from a rear drive vehicle should do the trick.

You could probably get a complete assy (differential+wheels) from a scrap yard for peanuts.(I'd guess about $75)

The differential would be placed with rhe driveshaft flange facing upwards. Thie flange would now serve as a spinning table to fling the materail outwards by adding a suitable disk of probably 10-12" or so.

Naturally a V shaped tow bar would be welded to the differential that would also serve as the frame to mount a hopper assy.

Hopper assy might be a barrel with a funnel welded to the bottom or again 4 large triangles forming the hopper.

When pulled over the ground the wheeles will spin the plate and fling the snand, seed or fertilizer very well.

I have seen a home made version working and it does a fine job.

Based on this approach I got myself a small plastic seed broadcaster that I locked both wheeles to the axel and use it to spread sand on my driveway. One pass walking the length of my hills does an excellent job covering about 10" wide.
I had to lock both wheels due to the fact that with only one the 10' narrow plastic wheels skidded on the ice.

For a 'pull behind' I always figured that a rear drive compact car rear end assy would be great. (like 12" tires)

Biggest challenge will be flow control from the hopper.
I always figured on making up a guillitine or knife 'valve' that would be controlled by a HD bowden cable.
Or even a windshield wiper moter might open/close the 'valve' . Naturally one would have to disable the 'park function'.

This, as a project, has been on my mind for quite a while, but basically I just can't justify the usage in my case.

After some more thought. I have come up with the ideal of using chain sprockets form a bicycle. I am thinking about using the sprocket form a multispeed bike that has two sprocket mounted together on the axel. Then attach a chain from one side of the sprocket to the spining disk and another chain from the other side to the agitator. This is just another thought, i am still not sure if it will work. If anyone has any other ideals please let me know. Thank you in advance.

There was several pull type spreaders built here in the old days of farming. I see a few of them ever day made out of Model A rearends and such. They were made to spead sawdust and dried manure out of chicken houses in the past. Some are still in use today for food plots and other sitres as you can carry a heavy load in them and have them hitceh to the disc ot boxblade on the tractor.

I wonder how strong the bike would be? One thought is if it does hold up and you used a multispeed uniut would you be able to set up up to shift gears? might be handy that way!

I would think the set-up would work for the light material but rock salt tned to clump and jam things.

my 2 cents
