I love my new CK30 HST but I have a question for the more experienced members here.

What tips do you have about the proper method for changing from one range to another? Lower the RPM's or not necessary? I am applying the clutch, lowering the RPM's and stepping on the HST pedal to "lower the pressure" and then changing. Is that proper?

NOTE: My dealer still can't get me a #@%! manual for my tractor so I worry about little things like this.

Thanks.

I've never stepped on the HST pedal when changing (or even heard of stepping on the HST pedal when changing) the Low/Medium/High range handle. If your range handle is that difficult to move I would go under the tractor and lubricate all the linkages, especially where it goes through the wall of the tranny.

I think what jimmy means is that when changing ranges he stops the tractor from rolling first because the manual calls for stationary when shifting ranges but I too sometimes have to slightly move the machine a bit by stepping down slightly on the HST pedal. This seems to help allign the gears in the range box for meshing together. I do that in the event that the gears dont quite line up preventing changing ranges.

The same thing (for me) has to be done sometimes when shifting in or out of 4WD

Yeah, what he said. Thx rimshot.

The thing that made me ask is that sometimes it is incredibly easy to change and other times the shift lever does not want to move. I don't want to force anything.

Good tip on greasing the linkages. It's actually a decent day today so it's a big ole greasin party at the farm.

Thanks.

If you feel the range selector is stiff like you are going to break it off when trying to shift the range I tell my customers to use stead pressure on the handle and just bump the foot pedal and it should slip out of the range you are in.

Ain't got that problem, course mine is a gear, not hst.Mine shifts just as smooth as my toyota pickup!

Same problem here. I have a new DK40HST, and whenever I shift the L-M-H lever, the gears never seem to be meshed so I can't move the lever. I have to tap the hydro pedal to mesh them. Seems like there would be some solution to this, but even on my last tractor, which was a New Holland TC29D, I had to do the same thing. Just stubborn!

I can't take credit for this suggestion because someone posted it before........ While the tractor is stiil moving or slowly coming to a stop, depress clutch, step on the brake, and then change range. Stepping on the brake seems to keep the "pressure" off of the gears as you come to a stop and MOST of the time changing ranges is very smooth. It's all second nature now and works very well for me. The idea here is to have the brakes stop you and not the tranny. Good Luck.

I do exactly what HODAK does, and it seems to work fine, and once you get the rhythm down, comes naturally. Now if I could just remember to take the parking brake off before moving the tractor about 50 feet and looking down and finally noticing the "P" lit up!!

Should be some interlock that prevents the HST from moving until the parking light is out!!

Excellent tips. Thanks a lot. I don't feel like such a do-do now that I see others had the same issue. Another great example of this forum's value.

Funny one Kiotibill! I just did the same thing yesterday!:D:D
