I recently picked up an 84 JD 420 to restore and while going over it at home I noticed the previous owner had been running it with the hydro sight glass and tubing missing off the differential case. I worry if they ran it without enough fluid that damage might have happened. I'm replacing the tubing and changing all fluids and filters among other things. How do I check for any damage to the trans?

I finished changing all fluids tonight. The trans fluid was about half empty. Some dummy before had the filler tube disconnected at the trans. They probably wondered why it poured out everytime they went to fill it.

At this point, you can use it and see how it works, or you can tear into it and see3 what al has some damage. It it were me, I'd change the fluid and filters, run it, and see what I had before I started digging through it. Just as with most other things, you're only going to find the wear if you dive into it, or use it.

It's been a tedious process fixing all the problems to try and save this tractor. I finally got the chance to fire it up and take it for a spin today. Literally. I was doing donuts in my driveway! lol I was so happy to see it running again. It drives good except I cant get the diff lock to engage. Also there is a bad oil leak coming from the hydro pump.

That's something to look into....but I'm happy for ya also. You're a few steps closer to her being "like new" again

Well I have some good news to report! The diff lock problem was "operator error". I come from a 4x4 background where usually the diff lock stays engaged utill you disengage it. This is my first tractor and I didnt realize you have to push and hold the diff lock to use it. I'm glad it wasnt an internal problem with the rear diff!
