I'm a noob at this, and don't know what's "normal". I' am looking at putting a 16 gpm pump on the rear PTO of my Yanmar SA424. It fits, but there won't be room to attach hoses or a torque bar/chain unless I remove the surrounding "safety shield". Is this what is "normally done" or am I missing a better way?

thanks in advance!

Just guessing here.

You might be able to add an extension to the pto output.

If you do have to remove the shields, you could look for a means to use some kind of quick attach hardware in place of the usual bolts.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've added a couple pictures so you can see the lack of clearance.

The PTO shaft is about 3" long and the pump is about 6.5" deep, so the shaft doesn't go all the way through. Again, is this normal? Should I really be looking for full engagement?
The ports will clear the shield if I can get the pump about 3.5" further out, so that extension might work out .

Again, not knowing what is "normal", but having seen my share of "unexpected outcomes"(!), I have to ask. As the pump itself is about 30 lbs, will the extension shaft get wobbly and start gyrating with that much weight just sitting out there?

I'm powering a hydraulic rototiller that was from my cub cadet 3000 series garden tractor. I was thinking I could just put the pump on the PTO and drive it, but now I'm wondering if that's the right way. Again, never having run a PTO shaft, I have to ask if it would it be smarter to mount the pump on the tiller and use a shaft to drive it?

That sounds like the best bet to me. I assume your tractor doesn't have remotes.

I live in a rural area and see guys with mangled limbs way too often. And, they are the ones that grew up around machinery. So, I am backing away from any suggestion of removing a safety device. And, then, there is the possibility of tearing up the pto final drive.

I think that you are right to be concerned with hanging that much weight unsupported. And maybe there is a way to bracket the pump and keep the weight off the extension.

If you still have that Cub, maybe you could use it until getting a proper solution. As marchanna alluded, remotes would be the ticket.

Many thanks to all for the input.

1. The cub was sold to a fellow who didn't want a tiller and I willingly kept it as it is a really nice attachment.
2. I looked at adding remotes, but the flow rate of the on-board hydraulics is insufficient for this attachment.
3. The original pump was a 2000 rpm pump, which I could reverse the direction and fab a bracket to mount under the tractor. I'd have to also buy new hoses due to length. The external 540 pump was anticipated to be less of a long-term hassle.
4. Didn't realize how heavy the pump would be!
5. I need to make some mods to go from Cat0 to Cat1 mounts, so I'll look into how to fab up a pump mount on the tiller to take a PTO drive.

That sounds like a great solution

When I bought my (used) tractor it came with just such a pump on it. The pump itself was mounted to a bracket that was mounted to the tractor. This addressed the weight issue you're referring to. To make room for the bracket, the shield had been removed. I believe the bracket actually made use of the shield mounting points. It was just some bent metal that held the pump from above; nothing could fall down between the pump and the tractor and hit the PTO shaft because the bracket covered that space. Personally, I don't see the problem with removing the shield while using the pump provided the pump is mounted and the bracket doesn't allow things to dangle down between pump and tractor and snag on the PTO. I assume you'll need to mount the pump to the tractor in some way, otherwise what stops it rotating, just the hoses?

If the shield is removed to make way for the pump and a bracket there won't actually be anything exposed at the rear of the tractor that rotates.

I'd won't fault you for trying to find a way to mount it and keep the shield; that's probably the best solution.
