I just bought a cattle guard saturday. Its 6ft deep and 12ft long. Has 2 7/8 pipe sitting on (3) 8" I-beams. Im trying to figure out how to install it? Any suggestions? Someone told me something about putting it in concrete?
We have always dug a shallow hole under the cattle guard, sometimes even got fancy enough to pour concrete "walls" in the hole (lots of times the hole doubles as drainage ditch). But we leave the cattle guard free so we can remove it w/ the FEL and clean out the wash that accumulates.
I have two cattle guards that I installed two different ways. The first had a piece of metal on the approaching sides so no cement was used. The ground was leveled with the FEL and place right on the ground.
The second had no metal on the approaching sides so to keep the dirt out and a bug bump as you drive over it I installed 1 foot wide 8" deep cement curbing. I then got really picky and put down and leveled eight 4" by foot square cement blocks and put tar paper on top of them and set the cattle guard on it with my FEL and a chain (as you can see in the previous post).
Both cattle guards were put in a natural low spot and the road (gravel) was built flush to it.
