.... you might consider posting a picture of the friction disk to see what others think about the wear.

I can't get my photos to post. It is probably a pop-up blocker thing.

I found this on another forum and thought it might be helpful for furture folks with this problem:

"The retractor pins are a tight fit in the axle housing. I use a couple of lady slipper pry bars to pry out the brake plate with retractor pins attached. just pry a small amount and work your way around to keep it coming out evenly. Be sure to replace the orings on the brake plate/piston before reinstalling it. Install 3 new retractor pins and use loctite on the threads. When pressing it back in, I like to use three c-clamps right on the threaded end of the retractor pins. be sure to push it in all the way until it stops. Again press in evenly on all three spots to prevent breaking the brake plate."

Thanks,
Granny DP

We also found some grease fittings that we didn't know were there. Gonna have to start doing some regular maintenance on those too. I don't remember that being mentioned in the maintenance list, but I may have overlooked it.

What grease fittings are you referring to? By chance are you calling the brake bleeders on top of the axle housings grease fittings or maybe the outside axle brg grease fittings???

...are you calling the brake bleeders on top of the axle housings grease fittings...???

No we are not confusing them. The brake bleeders are on the transmission end. The grease fittings are on the axel hub end. We wondered why JD didn't use closed bearings because you have to contort yourself to get to them

Despite his reluctance to pull against the tabs on the plate, he got the piston plates off by carefully jacking them with a puller.

We left the tractor at the farm this w/e and had brought both axel housings to the house. But now we are wondering if we should go back to the farm and see if the axel stub shaft will turn easily by hand without the any housings. Should it??? If it does NOT turn freely (in neutral) then I guess the springs were not the problem.

Yes, you should be able to turn the stub axles freely. If not, then you have either differential or transmission issues.

Sorry to read that you are not getting much help with your brake problem.

Maybe post some pics of how far into this brake job you are, and maybe it will stimulate some good responses.

You've been addressing this problem for a good long time, from reading your posts.
