Hung the rear gang of my disk on a tree and broke the bracket. Have broken bolts before with smaller tractor but the 5500 jerk a knot in it!

Thinking of cutting off the top broken section and welding a angle the same thickness overlapped on the remaining bracket, Drill 2 holes and couple of new bolts (maybe not as hard this time) and bolt it back up.

Would a butt weld with gusset plates on each side be stronger?

Also, rod size and suggested welder setting- Miller Thunderbolt.

Thanks In Advance for any suggestions!

I would only put the gussets on the inside. Weld all the way around the gussets.
Put a 30-degree bevel on both plates. Gap using a 3/32 "drill bit. Use 1/8" 6010 at around 75-amps. Cap with 1/8" 7018 at around 120-amps.

I was wanting to 'patch' it but would rather spend the effort to make a good solid repair,

Thank you sir.

Your skills and wisdom are still needed

Don't make it so strong such that the next time you get hung up the gear case on your tractor breaks out... Just saying...

I do not have much I can add to this thread but will point out that 6011 can be used for the root pass instead of the 6010. 6010 can be hard for us hobbyists to find short of either buying a huge tin from LWS or resorting to mail order. 6011 you can find pretty much anywhere. 6011 will run on any welding power source too where 6010 might not run so well on lower end machines. 6011 has better ductile welding properties too.
