Well, now that I soon hope to get some replacement
springs, does anyone have an idea how to relieve the
tension to get the old ones off? I tried a come
along and it looked like it was putting an awful lot
of tensions on the belts so I thought I better
inquire of someone that knows more than me before I
went further. mvphoto6834.jpg

Hi there, I can't say I've ever tackled one before - but looking at it, I would think the quickest and ultimately safest way to do it would be to cut it... surprisingly. If you could make some sort of shield to hide behind, with just enough access to get a cutting torch at the top hook - I'd be tempted to go that route.

Rather than prying and pulling and having to work directly with the spring I see it as the option with the least amount of hassle. If you have something between you and the spring, and containing it against the side of the baler, the force is just going to pull straight down, not out. In a quick sharp bang it should be just hanging there for you.

As for getting the new one on... Well that's going to be a struggle all in itself. Check back here, when you get it off and we can bounce some ideas around.. Good luck and stay safe.
