how to spread gravel walking path width?

Is there a way to spread gravel from a dump truck that limits the spread to about half of the truck width? This is not for a car driveway. Just a walking path, but a fairly long one. It would be going across the edge of an open field so I think there is access for a dump truck.

If there isn't a way to do this from a dump truck, is there some other way short of moving a pile of gravel using a FEL/Bobcat/wheelbarrow?

I have seen dump trucks with a small (maybe 16" square) "trap door" in the gate that might work.

6x6 or 8x8 post in the bed against the tailgate prior to loading. It won't fall out when the tailgate only opens 4" or so. Cut it to the appropriate length so it allows the open portion to dump. Push it left or right so you can dump along one side. Or place 2 shorter posts, one on each, side to allow a center dump. :thumbsup:

We called them asphalt gates. They can work for what you want provided the path is located on level (side to side) ground. Also, a loaded truck will leave its mark on all but the most solid ground. It also requires dry crushed material, either a clear crushed (no fines) or a very dry crushed rock with fines. Most materials I spread worked just fine out of the full width gate but some would "gum up" and i had to fight it to get it out when set for a 4" spread.
Talk to the gravel dispatcher about what you want to do and he will likely recommend the right product for your application and dispatch the right truck for the job, if he believes it to be possible.
