Last week I filled up a 5 gallon can with what I believe was diesel. However, about a day later, before using it, I got a bad feeling that I may have filled it up with regular unleaded. Today I checked the can and the fuel is not dyed, so I went to the same station and filled another 5 gallon can with diesel and it also is not died. So now I need a way to figure out if the gas I bought last week is diesel or not. Are there any tests?

Gas and diesel have a very different smell. If you compare the two you should be able to tell them apart. Also, diesel feels a little oily.

Dump about a teaspoonful on the ground and light it. If it flares up, it's gasoline but if it's difficult to light and burns sooty, it's diesel

I run 2 gasoline autos and a diesel car and truck,as well as 2 gas lawnmowers and a gas snowblower plus a diesel tractor. It's easy to forget which one you're buying for.Although I've yet to screw it up,I've come awfully close. Many years ago,I decided the best policy was to buy gasoline and diesel fuel at different stations. It's kind of a mind set thing-works for me.

My solution is simple. Yellow can for diesel, red can for gasoline. Works every time.

If you dont have a yellow can for diesel, at least make a tags and attach them to all the fuel can labelling the contents. As stated, smell the contents, diesel and gasoline have an unmistakable smell. If you smell the container prior to use, there is now way to mix them up. Now a gas oil mix like for two cycle engines can easily be mistaken for regular gasoline if you dont do a visual. Most 2 cycle oil mixes are dyed to provide a tint. Dont mix those up with dyed diesel. Either get different colored cans or label them with easily read labels.
