Is there anyway to test the coils on an LT106 John Deere tractor ? My son said he suspects the coils to be shot (he tried with other coils and the engine would run but a little weak).
The problem is if I buy him some new coils, you can't return them if the problem is elsewhere.

Coils generate a spark that is measured in 10K volt increments. 30-40-50 thousand volts (or more depending upon the particular coil). You'd need a pretty good voltmeter..

Also need the OEM specifications for the coil. You could test the impedence and/or the voltage output - but you will need to know the acceptable range of values for that model of coil.

Your dealer (shop foreman or part's manager) might be able to look up the reference values for you as well as a recommendation for testing.

Thanks a lot for the info. I finally went to the John Deere dealership. They agreed to test my coils on a demo LT166 tractor. I guess they weren't aware of your coil testing technic.
