how wide can I go

I have a 4720 58hp deere
I have mostly 6-7' wide equipment.

I have an orchard and I'd like to get 'up under' the trees with my implements. What I have is about tractor width so I cannot get up close to the trunks of the tree's unless I back up to them.



What I'm interested in knowing is:

How wide of a disc is available that will attach to cat 1 and be appropriate for this size tractor.

Same question for shredder - I see the MX8 is listed - is that about as big as one would want to use with this tractor.

I have a wild thought about a disc. If 12-13 feet is to much for this tractor - what are the chances someone build a 'frame' which is that wide but only has discs on the outter 4 feet or so with basically a blank area in the middle. I could made passes between the tree's then go back with the normal 7 foot disc I already have to finish up the job in the center.
This probably sounds crazy but cleaning up under the leaf lines is really tedious with the equipment that I have.

I'm not sure what trees you have , but the consencus is now use roundup or just mow under most fruit trees. Too many feeder roots are damged discing. Anyway it shouldn't be too difficult to leavee even # of pans out of the center. For mower, search google for orchard mower.

if you are wanting to mow under them and cost is a concern I would look for a sickle mower. I use one often to mow under treelimbs around field edges and it works quite well. you can also chop through brush and small saplings with it and even trim tree limbs that aren't too big, though I wouldn't advise this too often. You canusuallyfind these used at a very good price.

Hey Tex,

The MX8 mower should be OK with your 4720 if the grass is not too thick.

Check if they make it in an offset version. Most major mfr's do that. Sometimes it eliminates a gearbox on the mower.

How do you like the tractor? HST or Power Reverser? JD made the Operator and Safety video at my farm but I haven't seen it yet. 4 man video crew from Milwaukee spent a week here in April filming it. The assembly plant is near here.

Grass has a chemical in it that inhibits the growth of trees. If your orchard is well established this may not hurt you.

I have a 4710 with a mx8, no problems, and youve got 10 more hp, your tractor wouldnt have a problem with it.
