I'm with you. I know that state and federal taxes alone are at least 40 cents a gallon. Errors are made everyday by humans. If we hold a business to their errors, prepare to hold yourself to the same standards. Common sense you think would prevail in stories like these.

Like the saying goes finders keepers.

Just curious - if you receive an extra $20 (or $5 or $1) in change because the clerk at the register made a mistake, do you keep it?

If you find a wallet, a purse, a tool with an ID on it do you make an attempt to return it? I for one have found the thrill of thankfullness far exceeding that of monetary value. I have found many stray lost dogs in my time and must say, everyone has had an owner more then willing to pay a reward, something I would never accept. The happiness of the two departed souls reuniting is all my soul needs.

Here's a twist and something that once happened to me.

Back about 1980 or so, filled up and for arguments sake, we'll say I put $20.00 into the tank, the exact amount it showed on the pump (with the rotary numbers, not electronic/digital)

Walked over to pay for it the guy said "$20.05 please" because that is what it said on HIS screen.

I argued that the amount was $20 and he argued that HIS screen said it was $20.05... so I told him to come out and look at the pump.

He did and he agreed.

No idea why there was a discrepency and we were both right from our own point of view.

As I recall, I won that battle! (whoo hoo) /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I agree here.

Owed a friend $400 once. Had cash in my wallet to give him, we went water skiing. Once done we were in parking lot, seperated by about 50 feet and I remembered the money. We were too tired to cover the 50' as he said, aww, just give it to me next week.

Next day, I go skiing with a different friend, was in water BUT had forgotten that I still had my wallet in my pocket.

Lost the wallet during one of my (many) spills along with the $400 I owed friend #1. (so this was a costly lesson because I STILL had to pay friend #1)

Put it all behind me and about 5 years later I got a call from some lady. Seems her husband had been fishing along same lake and found my wallet washed up on shore.

They peeked inside it and it had credit cards, drivers license and other "stuff" that people slide into the little areas. The cash however and everything that was in the BIG compartment, was of course, gone.

I was still, very stunned and appreciateive that someone took the effort to hunt me down after what was in fact, 5 years between seperation.

I guess for the finders, it was probably fairly easy as I was still in town and had public number.

The wallet was straight and stiff as a board so I put it into sink and washed it out, worked it around a bit and finally, put it back into service for several more years.

I'm pretty sure 'point of view' wouldn't matter these days. At least in florida anyway, there is a dept of ag. stamp on the machine.. it must read zero when reset, and you pay the price it shows .. tax included.. if it doesn't.. you contact the ag commissioner and file a complaint. This triggers an investigtion with a final outcome anywhere from you getting the dispued money back.. or the retailer getting a fine.. or simply nothing in the case of pidly stuff. ( been there.. done that )
