edgeman,

This saw mounts on the front-end of an old narrow-front row-crop type tractor. The pulley is driven by a 6" canvas belt from a mid-pto drive pulley on the side of the tractor. When I was a kid we had one on our JD Model B. The saw is used for cross-cutting logs. We used ours for cutting firewood.

I used one of them in the 60's. The flat portion, (with the edge) is a tilt-table, would hold the wood (log) and rock into the blade. Back in it's heyday, chainsaws were not as cheap or plentiful, and many people, me included, used two man hand saws to fell the trees and cut to length, then you could use the cordwood saw to save wear and tear on the chainsaw (if you had one). Typically you would have pre cut your firewood to a size you could lift, 5 " in diameter or less and 6 or 7 feet long. Drag it out of the woods and use the cordwood saw on the front of a tractor (I used a Case DC or SC). The saw blade was powered off the side pulley by a 8" canvas belt, spun around 1000 RPM and had (as pictured) NO GUARDS ON ANYTHING! Imagine a 24" diameter blade spinning at 1000 RPM with 30 or more HP behind it! Why none of us got killed (or lost any limbs) is beyond me, other than the fact that we operated the equipment with LOTs of respect.

I still have that saw stored up in the loft of the hog pen. Don't thing I have the desire to ever see that thing spin again.
