LATE 1952 FORD 8N
I just installed a Howard on the 52' 8N and have a few questions on shimming the bearings for the PTO shaft and the Mainshaft. How do you check for proper freeplay and what is the measurements? Also has anyone here installed one, as I had 1 bolt that rubbed on the PTO shifter housing to the layshaft gear on the howard. Also the case had alot of build up where ever the oil was, not much above the oil line. It was like a layer of cloth and peeled off like super thick duct tape. I ddin't want to disturb much for fear of something clogging the hydro pump. It almost looked like spray on rhino truck bedliner. with a red tint. Can the cases be cleaned or flushed good with diesel or kerosene without taking entire trans / hydro/ and rear axle apart? Thank you

A few pictures here;;;;

Sorry to get your hopes up. I have no answers for you, I'm just bumping your post hoping someone here can answer your questions. There are some old-timers on here who will hopefully be able to answer your questions.

the red paint on the inside of the case is glyptol

if real dirty, drop the pump and power wash the case.. reinstall pump and cover, fill with 3 gallons cheap utf fluid and 4 quarts 91% rubbing alcohol.. take her for a good spin.. get the oil slung and circulated well.. then drain hot.. then refill with utf or 90wt gl1 or gl3 oil, or an 80w90 gl4 or a gl5/mt1 oil stating it is yellow metal safe.

might take you 2 hours maybee less if you are fast.

Now you say red paint ? The stuff that was peeling off was almost 1/8" thick in spots, is that glyptol. If you look at the picture there is red paint where I peeled off the thick stuff.

Also any info on shimming the bearings for the output shafts. They both had 2 shims 1 was .005 and the 2nd was .011 for the mainshaft. The PTO bearing had 1- .005 and 1 - .009 . How important is it to get the bearings shimmed correctly. In my manuals it doesn't have a spec # it just states to check bearing shimming correctly. Thanks for the info

i couldn't get your pic to load.. said I didn't have access.

the red paint on the interior of the casting is glyptol.. any thick stuf you peeled off is buildup.

I'd totally clean it out.

i don't have a manual for the howard.. but can tell you correct bearing preload is important.
