I have a 66in Howse Disc and a question about how tight each connection should be--a picture of one similar to mine is included below.

My question is about some bolts that connect the upper frame to the plow section. On my disc the U bolts in the front of the picture are good and tight, but the U bolts that hold the bars that hold the series of four or five discs is not tight. After plowing I checked the nuts on these connections and they seem to be lock nuts, but not run up the thread very far. I tried to turn them a bit but very difficult

Should these be tight or it is best for the bars to swing a bit? They appear very tight in this picture.

They should be tight, and I'd have to dig out my manual to see if they should be "torqued" which I don't think so,but not really sure.

Milton :
I dug out my Howse disc harrow operators manual. They do have to be"tight".
Also it has a torque / bolt specification chart.I will just make sure mine are tight not going to be checking each nut bolt with a torque bar.
Hope it helps !

Thanks, Boone, for the research and info. Mine actually has a set of U bolts in addition to the ones in your picture, but I do think these need to be tighter than they are also. In your picture the bar the holds the U bolts that hold the discs is positioned between two pieces of metal welded on top and bottom of the slot. On my disc the bar is attached with the U bolt.

It looks like there may be some play in the slot on your disc, and it may be ok for mine to have some play as well. I know the U bolt that holds the disc needs to be extra tight.

Thanks for your help. I tried to tighten them a bit before plowing yesterday afternoon but found that I need two 3/4 wrenches to make it happen. The old adjustable wrench just does not hold in some cases.
