Helping a buddy with his HPX 4X4, with the 4wd unlocked it engages the front end on it's own. You can unplug the wire and it still does it. Removed the diff., tore down and inspected, couldn't find a thing wrong with it. Anyone had trouble with this. Local dealer didn't have a clue.

Thanks, Alan

You know I had this happen to me once as well. I was spinning the rear tires in snow for awhile and then all of a sudden the front end locked in... Never happened again but if I had to take a stab at it I would say there's some sort of adjustment that needs to be made with how it engages, I don't think anything is broke. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help though.

I found this after searching the forum, it seems the later models a\have an automatic 4wd.......This unit is exactly like the one on this HPX! This would explain everything. :)

I remember reading this same thing happening on a Polaris Ranger on the www.prcforum.com. Apparently, the JD and Polaris use the same drivetrain components. The Polaris guys are buying the parts from JD dealers because they are cheaper! Check out that forum and search for John Deere.

From what I read, the disk that engages the AWD gets magnetized over time and causes the problem. Thanks for the link Brian. Signed up and waiting for activation now.

OK, took the diff apart again, sure enough.....a slight amount of magnetizing remains after you turn off the AWD switch. JD wants $14 for the plate, $270 for the side cover!

Got to be a better way, my buddy wonders if you replace it how long before the new one does the same thing.

Mine did it after 1 year. But that was an isolated incident.

Well mine did it at high speeds. Actually though I don't think you're supposed to engage 4wd at any speed if the wheels are spinning, you'll hurt the front end.
