-Hello everyone and thank you for reading my question. I'm new here and from Lancaster PA. My friends call me Five.
I'm also a newbie when it comes to this so please excuse my descriptions.

HPX Trail Gator 2003 w/ V Blade Plow (The machine is in goo shape):

The other day when plowing snow I noticed a faint burning smell possibly coming from the fuse box area (but could have been anywhere or anything really). Maybe just water burning off the engine.
When I was finished plowing I parked the Gator and the next morning when I was not home my Father and Brother attempted to use it.
As I am told it would not start for them so they jump started it from an SUV the incorrect way and (positive to positive and negative to negative straight connects).
A following explosion of sorts came from the fuse panel and melted some fuses and damaged others. They then replaced the damaged fuses with other fuses (which I am assuming were incorrect) and got it to run and drove it up to my brothers house about a mile away.
At my brothers house they got it stuck and again the battery died. They tried to jump it again only this time with a jumper box and to no avail the HPX would not start. It was also on a hill.
When I got there I just shook my head. I dug it out and coasted it to a flat surface where I worked on it.
I replaced all the fuses to the factory specs, put the booster box on it the correct way (booster negative going to frame ground not battery terminal) and gave her a go.
She backfired a couple of times and it was really loud.
I then thought they had fried the battery so I replaced it with a brand new 12V 340 per the manual.

So now we have a fresh battery and correct fuses. Still the Gator would not fire up and I could hear a periodic lurching sound coming from the engine area. And this would stop the starter.
When I used the choke and padded the pedal I could smell gas so I am assuming it is getting gas. But it just wont kick over. I also heard some odd compression type sounds.

Here is my conclusion after searching this forum for some time:

Fouled spark plugs?
Fried Starter Module?
Fried Fuel Solenoid?
Fried Fuse Panel?
Fried something?
Snow/H2O got in enginge and seized it?
The carb pin?
Wrong Fuel? Perhaps my brother put in weedwacker fuel?

Yeah guys I just don't know. I know it was running with the wrong fuses in the wrong places for a short period of time... I would like to try and fix it as I am on a tight budget and am not looking forward to taking it to the dealer.
And also, what is the brass colored part that is mounted to the frame and comes after the gas filter? It looks almost like a sideways mounted bell.

Ok thanks again for reading my novel and any ideas to point me in the right direction to fixing her would be great. I'm really looking forward to hearing from you.

Sounds I hear:

1) start start start start lurch stop

2) start start run for a split-second stop, smell fumes

3) start engine lurch stop start engine lurch stop
