So probably a stupid question but I was getting ready to do the 50 hour service on my DK40SE HST. Tractor is in TN at my land so I went to the local dealer and told them I am doing the 50 hour service so i needed the filters.
I had read on hear that the trans filter is sometimes hard to get off but to park the tractor uphill so I wouldn't lose much fluid.
So I assumed (I know bad thing to do) that I would get an one filter for the trans which is exactly what the dealer gave me.

Now the confusion starts, the manual shows 2 filters, a trans filter and a HST filter. Trans filter (which is what I think the dealer gave me) looks to be located under the front loader controller side of the tractor (right rear tire area) and is mounted pointing up so if you removed it you wouldn't lose much fluid. The other one is on the left side of the tractor and is mounted horizontally. I am assuming this is the HST filter.

How do you change this one without losing a bunch of HST fluid?
Not sure why the dealer only gave me the trans filter, I told them it was an HST model

Thanks

There isn't a trans filter and hst filter but you do have two filters with an hst transmission. The vertical filter, which is bigger, is the one for the hst. The horizontal filter is just the multi device filter for everything else which is for the fel, 3pt, steering, rear remotes if you have them. They dedicate that one filter just for the hst, which is your trans, so it gets its own clean full supply of hydro fluid. At 50 hours, you'll want to both. You'll be surprised, if you cut it open, the small machining shavings in it. Also when you ever pull the drain plugs that have magnets, you find more shavings.

Are you saying that the 2 HST filters don't share the same HST fluid? I have only seen one place to check the Hydro fluid and that was in the rear of tractor by the 3pt.

No he is not saying that.It shares the same sump. The Hst has its own inlet filter

On my dk the horizontal filter, yellow color is the hst. The dark vertical is the hydraulic. The hydraulic filter is tough to remove. Use a chain vise-grip wrench.
I not only changed the filters, but all the fluid at the 50 hour mark.
