Re jinman,In my area, yes gear drive is the preference on the compacts so far ,I guess it comes down to individual choice or what the dealers show customers.Got to agree with Richard about HST on lawnmowers, the only way to go:) Kerry.

Found this technical bulletin on the Firestone site. Basically say everything you have said MarkC. It adds some explainations what over/under/proper inflated tires may cause. This technical bulletin talks about the lead/lag on the Fwd system on tractors and how it can contribute to tire wear. Something you talked about a while ago. Oops! of topic again for me.

One more off topic question MarkC, Do you have problems with the tires slipping on the rim in high traction, heavy pulling situations running a low pressure. I have seen this on a tubless tire/rim setup on a 2wd garden tractor. But with a tube couldn't it shear the stem off?

Derek - Nice link. It's true - if you have a slippage problem and you're using a tube, you can shear the stem off. I've never had any problem with slippage, though. Usually, if you do, you've got other problems, too, it's not just because you're running low pressures. For one thing, you have to make sure the tires are properly seated before setting your final pressure. For another, you have to make sure the wheels are the right profile and width. You can get away with using a rim on the narrow side, but never one that's too wide. If you have a slippage problem, you can usually trace it back to using the wrong wheel. My rear wheels are the original ones that came on the tractor - which means that, even though the tires are 5" wider than stock, the wheels still work fine. You can't go the other way, though.
