I was doing some pulling helping a neighbor get unstuck. There was a point where his vehicle would not move nor did I. The wheels did not spin and the motor did not labor. I held the HST, floored it and nothing. I let it idle and started jerking. At what point could I damage my HST? I tried easy pedel, to flooring and no movement of my wheels.

Should I have my tractor check by the dealer?

Think of that HST as a hyd pump, hyd motor and a relief valve. ( I'ts more complicate dthan that.. but it's a good visual... ).

When you had enought traction to keep the wheels firmly stuck, and enough power from the engine to turn the pump and not stall.. then your relief valve opened .. Constantly running in relief will heat the oil and -eventually- do damage.

Finding your relief limits a couple times trying to pull something is not likely to damage your tractor as long as you don't do it for extended periods of time..

( this is a prime reason i like a gear trans.. In those situations where it is needed.. when i let the clutch out I either want the object to move.. the wheels to break traction, the clutch to slip, or the engine to stall... none of this sissy stuff with no wheel movement and a chugging engine... (wink) )

I went through some of this with my CaseIH DX 33 which has the HST. I noticed one day that if I push the front bucket into the ground or against something like a tree stump it would not spin the wheels or choke the engine down when in range 2. It will spin all 4 tires in range 1. I bought the tractor when about one year old from an individual and I started thinking maybe something was wrong with it. One dealer said it might need the pressure relief valve checked. Another dealer said there was nothing wrong and this is the nature of the HST and they tell customers about this before they purchase to avoid complaints. I probably would not have purchased the tractor if I had known this in advance. I have wondered if some of the other brands like Kubota work better in this area but I don’t know. Having said all this I can report that the HST does work like a dream for what I am using the machine for.

Here's some reading for you! You will find all your answers right in these two threads. All in all, I wouldn't be without my HST for most of my work, but it does have its limitations. Clutches just are not for me, in fact all indications are I blew out my ACL on the left knee this past Tuesday:( There goes another ski season :(:(
