There should be a cover on the bottom of the bell housing, you can remove it to see what kind of clutch you have. Some tractor have a single stage clutch so you would a PTO over run so when you push in the clutch whatever you have hooked to your pto won't still be pushing the tractor when you depress the clutch.
A single stage clutch pressure plate.
A 2 stage (a split torque clutch for independant pto will look like this) The three fingers will have bolts that you can adjust against the throwout bearing.
A pto over run clutch for if you have a single stage clutch.
With independent pto you can engage the pto without pushing the clutch pedal.
The 202, and 451 has a 2 stage clutch (you should be able to engage the pto without gringing while the engine is running)
On the 255 it should have a 2 stage clutch (can you push the clutch pedal all the way down, and engage the pto without it grinding?). The clutch pedal could be out of adjustment, the 2 stage clutch could be out of adjustment, or the 2 stage clutch nay need to be replaced.
