Been heating solely with wood for several years and the first couple years cut with a Homelite with 20 inch bar from Home Depot- after just 2 years of use- everything on that saw except the engine itself has been trouble ,
Got tired of carb problems ,oiler problems, chain break problems, throttle problems, starter recoil problems, oh and best for last did I say carb- primer bulb failure problems. Had enough of that saw...

Picked up a Husky 350 -and what a massive improvement in Every way -lighter more powerful and best of all Trouble Free -for 5 years until this: husky 350 broken.jpg

Ordered a new clutch drum from amazon -but it must be on the slow boat from china cause looks like a full month till anticipated delivery.

I even tried to repair the drum by tig welding combined with mig and then grinding the hub to tempararily restore the chain drive teeth and it worked for one tree being bucked up and then back to being stripped out.

at this point i got ticked about the slow amazon progress and ordered a newer style drum off of ebay that has replaceable chain drive pieces but needed to keep cutting so it occured to me that when my dad passed i inherited an old McCulloch saw in a custom made wood enclosure.

Being busy , never even took the saw out of the case, but seeing how I didn't have a working saw at this point decided to give it a try.

Once I removed the saw and checked out the model I was surprised to find out this was a 70cc saw and kind of got a little excited -so filled her up with some 40:1 and the darn thing started right up!!

Fuel tank leaked so resealed that and went back to firewood work;pro mac 70 .jpgpromac700 done.jpg

I have to say this old saw ROCKS
- -Torquey, power that easily pulls the 20 inch bar the only downsides is It is LOUD and a bit heavy.

Still like the Husky for firewood but this will make a great back up saw and will work well for the bigger stuff if I get a longer bar for it.

Officially Impressed with OLD MCCulloch saw- and Thanks Dad - for still helping me out

LOVE that Grapple to hold logs for cutting. Wish I had one on my bucket.

Good to see old iron still working.

Until I get my (also inherited) Sachs Dolmar running properly, I rely on my Dad's small McCulloch for the bit of trimming I do around the house.

Thanks i actually should thank my dad for the grapple to.

the grapple he purchased at an auction several years earlier -it was sitting out in the weeds in a field on one of the families properties my sister bought from dad and since it didn't fit any of their equipment - she just gave it to me.

I still have no idea who manufactured it, but a little cutting, welding and about $200 in parts and hoses and it has been trouble free- works for moving stumps and also 1200lb hay bales to.

If there was just one addition i could have for my FEL- it would be a grapple, I don't think that i have ever seen a person on TBN who actually regretted getting one. If you do you will love it.

Yeah have done a bunch more cutting with it and kind of like the 3/8 chain vs. .325 on the husky-It starts and idles every bit as well as the Husky will be keeping this saw for sure.
I bet that 850 REALLY RIPS:thumbsup:

Congrats on the "new" saw. 70ccs is a great size for bucking those larger rounds. Maybe a little heavy to carry all day, but darned nice to have at the firewood yard. You'll always think of your dad while using it too, which is great.

Depending on how long that Mac sat around for, it's possible that some of the seals or other rubber parts may have become brittle. You should definitely check/replace the fuel line, impulse line, and carb boot. It would also be worth doing a pressure/vacuum test on the saw to make sure it's not leaking air, which will cause a lean-seizure in a jiffy. These are not tough or expensive things to do, and will ensure that this saw runs for a long long time.

Lastly, make sure you know how to tune this saw so that it's running correctly. That's another easy way to seize a two stroke is by running it too lean.

Thanks , i have checked the fuel line and the fuel filter and removed the carb and checked the seal to intake port. Also have dialed in the hi needle jet and it does the 4 cycle burble with out being loaded down and cleans up nicely under load.

I didn't see a low speed jet adjustment screw- just idle speed but the saw idles nicely and doesn't seem to be running lean at any speed. Have probably bucked up a couple cords worth with it already and the saw is running great.

My new clutch/chain drive drums did show up and - also a new air filters for the Husky 350 .

So I should be using it shortly and will do a plug check and pressure test on the promac when time allows, Thanks for the suggestions they are appreciated .

ps. Anyone know if a muffler mod is worth doing on the 350 Husky??
Read some posts on other sites saying that it is worth doing and can really wake up the saw and possibly help it run a bit cooler to.?..
