I've been searching through the posts and it seems I need to remove this wire to get the cap off the cylinder. How the heck do I do that?!?!? It is really in there good. Any hints or tips on how to do this?

A picture says a thousand words.

Hard to tell from the picture but if it's like the ones on some of my cylinders one side will have a tab sticking up to keep it from rotating all the way around. The other side is the side you use something to tap it into the cylinder so the whole wire rotates around the tube internally. It won't take much and the other end of it will start to come further out. the further you can tap it around the more that will come out until you can grab it with visegrips or channellocks and finish pulling it out.

Yours may be different but I'm guessing all are the same design. Be careful pulling it and don't twist or pry too hard because if you break it off then you have to have something flexible to finish tapping that wire out of it's groove to release the head.

Good luck

Looks like there's a problem with the wire. Lock the cylinder in a pipe vise. If a pipe vise isn't available, try to put it in a vise so that you can lock it down tight and not damage the tube. You need to turn the cap. You might break the wire, but you can get another one. Stick something like a small pick down there and coax the wire out as you turn the cap. It may be a pain, but it will come out. It's a little difficult to tell, but you may have to turn the cap and break off the piece sticking out.
Good luck

Dang AKKAMAAN, where the heck do you get all these neat drawings? Old ornery people might not like this new stuff, but that illustrates it better then I can say it!

Excellent drawing, AKKA!

This comes up again and again....now we can just link to your image.

I have only done a few of this type myself, and I suspect this method is
chosen only to save money (no threading).
