wanting to change the hyd oil in my 1950 ford 8n. i think it calls for 134 hyd oil. probably hasnt been changed in 40 years or more. tractor still runs good and everything still works. do they still make that kind of 73 year oil? change the engine oil at least every other year. it called for 20w-20w non detergent oil if i remember right. just been using 10w30 or 10w40 last 30 years or so. supposed to run on leaded gas. i put the lead substitute in it. my dad bought it new in 1950. it has always ran except when we got it overalled 3 times over the years. like to keep it running for another 27 years. make it 100 years old then . i want know anything about it but some of my family would. thanks on any of your thoughts about what kind of hyd oil to use.

Your 8N uses 80W90 oil in the transmission/hydraulic/differential, it is a common sump for all three. The recommended oil is 80W90 GL1 but I have used 80W90 GL5 with no issues. There is a long story behind that I won't go into now. If the oil that you drain is milky looking you need to flush it out. Most folks use diesel or kerosene for this.

134D oil is for later model tractors and is to thin for the N tractor unless you have an absolute perfect hydraulic system.

The owners manual calls for SAE 30 in the engine but I doubt there is an 8N out there that is not now using 10W30 or 15W40. It's better oil than what was spec in the 40's & 50's.

As for the gas do not worry about using some kind of lead substitute your N will run a long and happy life on unleaded pump gas. Just try to avoid ethanol if you can since it can attach moisture and cause rust in the fuel tank. If you must use ethanol the at very least always fill and keep the tank full after each use.

I use 90w mineral oil from NAPA. They do it in 5 gal buckets. In the engine I've got 15w40 Delvac at the moment, seems to be doing ok and ethanol free fuel only. Try to get ethanol free fuel from a dedicated pump/hose, not one that dispenses various fuels.

Any cheap oil will work just fine.

Mine would also get any leftover fuel from a non running gas engine and even wattery fuel from a boat. Never had a carb issue in 8yrs.
