So im building a hydralic thumb for my mini. Now I am trying to figure out how much stroke I need on my cylinder. I have read so many posts but I have no definate answer. Now I have a line on a 2.5" bore 14.5 stroke cylinder for reasonable price. Now would this wo4k for me. Im going to be building this as a weld on unit, not a pin on. I already have all of the metal, free of charge, so now I just need the cylinder.

Also has anyone ever downloaded a manual from any pf these sites that sell them in pdf form.

Without seeing a detailed geometric drawing it's difficult to ascertain if will work. What are the pin sizes? What type of ends are on the rod and cylinder? Are they lubricated? What is the pressure rating of the cylinder?

You can make almost any cylinder work by reverse engineering it, or make up a life-size template from wood or cardboard and use trial & error.

Amazon has several weld-on complete units - very reasonable.

You can get a one piece hydraulic weld on unit 28" thru Showtime Fabrication for $670 , it is the cheapest I have seen. A friend in central FL. has one for his Takeuchi TB135 and I bought one for mine, it is to be shipped mid June, they are backed up with the work volume.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Assuming a 2.5" cyl is compatible with the excavator's curl cyl, there are three major variables
to customize: stroke, dipper bracket position, and cyl pivot point on the thumb.

Since changing the stroke length is the hardest, you can vary the other 2 in order to assure
the thumb retracts fully against the dipper, and has the range of motion you want.

The only reason that I customized my cyl stroke was cuz I had already built the thumb. If
I had not, and could vary my thumb pivot point, I would not have done it.

Yes, indeed, make a wood or cardboard mockup, too!

I don't think he heard what he wanted to hear. I'm betting he bought the cylinder though.

Sorry guys been busy. I did buy cylinder but had to return it. My machine only have aux hydralics for a hammer and not a thumb. So I ended up returning my cylinder and making it a mechanical thumb. I made mine a weld on unit not a pin on. Ill post some pictures soon.
