Im new to the forum, moved away from the city in decline last year (still employed there with a few left to go if they dont take the pension away) purchasing 65 acres and house to call home. This ipad is not the best for writing and forums so forgive the grammar(lack of) and excessive rambling details please.
Im japanese orange with a 2017 rtv1140x, got a L35 with 530 something hours I bought new in 99, just placed an order for M7060 cab loader 3rd function, 12 speed (gets me in 16 gpm flow range) with creeper, 2 rear remotes....
I want to build my own version of the LIMB NINJA or LANE SHARK. If I can post links
Limb Ninja, LLC. - Brush Cutters - MODELS
Lane Shark USA – The Only FEL Mounted Brush Cutter Designed For The Midsize Tractor
It will be really close to the limb ninja BUT I will be able to run on either side of the quick attach bracket or run out front wont have the time to make the arm like the lane shark or the money to buy either and then modify one to do almost the same things.
My property less than half cleared, is former timber that some was sold only a few years ago, judging by some of growth, other growth is at least 25 30 as house was built in 1991.
The purpose: I have some trails I want to clean up so branches arent smacking everything, make new trails too, also cut underneath stuff, ditches and in my head offset to one side and with the 6 foot moder ag cutter im getting (alot of reasons for that size that belong in a different post) and my fields get close to a 10ft cut per pass.
Will have attachment points for a hydraulic cylinder that using my 3rd function adjust on fly to take the cutter to below horizonal for banks ditches to vertical to open the lanes and trim bushes.
Ive got my eye on a used 4 foot brand name rotary cutter whch would save me lots of fab time BUT alot of costly mistakes can start immediately buying the cutter and thats where I would like opinions.
Can I just mount a pump and use coupling to run the gear box on the cutter as it is?
What should I look for as specs for the pump? Flow, maybe a flow controller is needed?
I plan to eventually modify my L35 with a quick attach bucket and let it do the real tough work that a cab tractor doesnt need to be used for so thats a consideration but dont know the flow its putting out
I like the Limb Ninja belt drive for driveline shock protection but could I just direct couple motor with sleeve, slip clutch or lovejoy to eliminate a maintenance item and belt sheaves to wrap up things in?
Assuming Im not trying to cut large diameter limbs off a hardwood (alot water oaks some live oaks, thats chainsaw territory) what are the forums thoughts on heavy blades stalling out under small loads in a vertical cutting position and all the problems the vibrations could cause from heavy rotary cutter blades shaking everythng apart?
I looked at limb ninja manual online and they use parts directly from DR Power that are certainly much lighter so the reciprocating mass is far less, easier to turn and wouldnt be as violent a vibration if the blades didnt chop through and there is balance problem that in vertical may not correct as easy...
Oil vent plug would need to be rethought so the lube doesnt leave the gearbox.
Im 52, a engineering school dropout that hated being starving college student a decent self taught fabricator with a mig, oxy acetylene torch, abrasive saw, hand tools, drill press and a small lathe but its all at our old place 55 mile away and because of the fire dept career and my 5 year old in K5 that I pick up, I can really only devote 5 hours every 3rd day to work at our old place and im still moving stuff...

Yes, you can mount a hydraulic motor directly to the spindle on the cutter and drive it directly. That's how the brush cutter and finish mower work on my Power Trac. You should put a love joy connector between the motor and spindle.

Sizing the hydraulic motor for correct RPMs of your cutter based on your hydraulic gallons per minute and PSI will be the hard part (math).

So:
- assuming the cutter was spun from a standard PTO at 540RPM (if not, correct the math)
- did it have a 1:1 gear box, or was it a reduction or increase ratio? You'll need to figure that out.
- go to the hydraulic calculators at Surplus Center and plug in your tractor's hydraulic flow in gallons per minute, and the PSI, and the desired RPMS, and it will tell you what displacement hydraulic motor you'll need to achieve the desired 540RPM (or reduction or increase if that's the case).

thanks good info Its a standard 4 foot deere rotary cutter looks in fair shape 525 asking price on the dreaded craigs. Not sure if a reduction or 1:1 and dont know if its a channel blade carrier or pan stump jumper wondering with weight of blades, is powering up to speed even possible in vertical or would it self destruct from off balance not being able to get blade at full extension on revolutions. Ive got a stash of oddball 22” x 1/4”thick yazoo mower blades I could adapt and cut pounds off blade weight and reciprocating mass. Im hoping someone will pop up and say they got hundreds hours on their similar brush mower build or they tried it and couldnt with the heavy blades and I may resort to a rider or zero turn mower deck and power it.

Powering up in vertical will not be good, in my opinion. WHAM! WHAM! WHAM!

I have to power mine up horizontal and at pretty darn low RPMs and let it spin up for a few seconds, then increase the throttle to full RPMS to get maximum flow.
