Hydraulic fluid specs

Just checking with the experts out there. I need a hydraulic fluid for my 51 Dearborn loader on a 52 8N. Since the control leaks with a Universal fluid that was recommended from my tractor maintenance guy, I'm wondering if a thicker type can work well with less leaking. Yes, I might have him replace seals in the loader controls, but wondering if a simple answer might help since we have better fluids in 2010 than were available for 1951 seals.

You might have more leaks to put a good oil in! I'd make the investment of some new seals if you like using the unit and want to keep it!

I agree the right thing to do is fix the seals,, but if not one could use a AW 68or 100 if not operating in very cold temps and has a dedicated sump NOT shared with clutches or breaks.

Thanks Daman1 and Art. I agree that having the leaks fixed is the right approach, but I was also interested in learning about fluids. It helps me to read about ISO and SAE and different weights so I can ask smarter questions at the farm equipment stores located here. I am interested in doing what's smart, and not what's cheap. That's why these forums (and your info) are so helpful.

If it's not a shared sump like i said above any ISO/AW(anti-wear) oil will work in heaver form.

how bad is the leak? if pretty good a heavier/thicker oil probably wont help much.

yep.. if it's not running of fhte belly pump.. iso 68 would probably be ok in warm areas.. but the pump won't like it inthe cold.

I'd fix the leaky control valve and just run utf oil in it..
