I think this is to all... so why does the hog not have chains hanging on it like others? I here that helps deflecting debris...

My blades actually extend about a half an inch past the front of the unit. So if there were chains hanging there, they would get eaten off pretty fast. I can see the blades going under the rear edge, too, so same thing would happen there, also.
