Ive built a log splitter, rehosed a backhoe, FEL is next. Maybe I should invest in a crimper. A little mobile one would do it. All kinds of different makers of fittings on Ebay which brings up the question. What goes with what? Can a cheap older crimper do the job with new crimps from Weatherhead or Gates I see for sale on Ebay? Guess I'm looking for "hydrualic hose crimping 101".;)

It all boils down to one thing. How much do you want to spend.

If you want a used crimper, look up surplushoseman on ebay. He is a very respected hose and fitting seller. You're looking at about a grand for a decent used machine. Tack on about another grand for some hose and a small stock of crimps. Surplushoseman also does crimper and fitting/hose packages that are very reasonable. It might work out if you also want to do a few hoses locally. I could help you if you go with a Weatherhead system. Any of the others and you're on your own. I do know that the Gates is a complicated machine. Most Napas use Weatherhead. So, if a Napa guy can do it, anyone can.

Well Im 30 miles from the city and with gas what it costs Im considering all my options. Seems everthing I've got hydraulic wise could be worked with -6 hose w -8 37 deg. JIC female both ends. Also with a few 90s thrown in there.

Of course the whole reusable fitting deal is tempting enough. Northern tool will set you up for 8 to 10 hoses for $200.00 and you dont have to crimp anything.

If I wanted to bad enough, I believe I could build a hose crimping press. Now those dies, they look kinda tricky. Might have to buy that;) .

The Gates electric machines look complicated but they are straightforward to use. I have no experience on the manual ones.

They have a die for each size of hose and a dial setting (travel setting) for each size. Pop die in holder, set dial, poke fitting through die, put on the masher ring and push the power button. Rinse and repeat.

The Gates fittings have long numbers but are straight forward after you break them down in sections.

G25100-0808 for example.

G25 is the family of fittings.

100 is type of fitting. (NPT in this example)

08 is the hose end size. (8/16ths or 1/2in)

08 is the thread end size. (again 1/2in)

Now that I've rambled for a few minutes. I suggest going to your nearest favorite supply house and see what brand fittings they carry. I would gear up for those fittings. Some day your gonna run one or two fittings short and have to make a trip to town for some.

most crimp machines will only work with one brand of hose (ie) gates with gates weatherhead with weather head then every hose size has different size dies. so you can't buy a machine and then use just any fittings that you can find as a rule the will blow off the hose more so with the higher pressure hoses

He-he-heeee. Over $1800 for the DHH pos air powered crimper that gets to within .010". With my Weatherhead, if I don't get within .005", something is wrong. The ebay one is a company called Fittings Export, they are a very reputable company. Making hoses ain't cheap. Everyone thinks we make a killing and are rich. To tell you the truth, I will probably close my shop this fall and go back to fixing forklifts as I made more money and had less bs.

You can get fittings that are reuseable. They kind of just screw into the hose and are just as good as crimped ones.

Per Andy's recommendation I got a Weatherhead crimper off Ebay for pretty cheap. Its a T-450, supposedly its the same as a T-460 crimper just older. The fact that the seller mispelled "Weatherhead" probably didn't hurt my chances. I now need the black spacer or the dimensions to make one.;) Then I'll be setup to crimp 3/8" as I have the collet coming for that one.

Don't even try to make a spacer ring. Call Fittings export in Burlington Kansas or, on ebay, look up surplushoseman. He has spacers and collets.
