I apologize in advance for this mini-rant:laughing:

I had a leaking hose on the old 5500. pretty steady, but not a blown hose or nothing. Hose is 52" long 3/4" diameter with -14 (7/8) JIC female fittings. They are the bucket cylinder hoses that make the bend around the main boom-to-dipperstick joint.

Old hoses were 100r2 but I wanted 100r16 for the added flexibility. I called the local place in town that makes hoses. They only have R2:mad: Owell, give me a quote anyway. I bout fell off my rocker,(cause I had already looked at fittings and hose online). $117+tax:shocked:

I ordered them from hoseinahurry.com. Excellent folks to deal with if you are not in a huge rush. But even so, I ordered at 2PM on Wensday and got them Friday:thumbsup: South Carolina to Ohio.

They had R16 hose too so that is a plus. Got two of them, Made and deivered for only ~$86:thumbsup:

With having an old BH, and dad having an old BH, I'd really like to get a crimper in the future, but I just dont see how the local place gets away with charging SOOO much:confused2:

There are probably different prices for different people.

New customers

Old customers

Plastic card customers

Friends and family, etc.

Given the title I was expecting a 10x price........does not seem that far out of line...Nothing to get upset about particularly if they are adding value such as local support

Well, not exactally 10x's, but its still 3x's:confused2: And its not like I asked them to drop what they were doing, make it, AND deliver it to me either.

I understand they gotta eat too. And I understand paying a little for convienence. But when I can buy fittings for ~$10ea, and hose for ~$3 or less a foot, one hose only has ~$25 in material. And thats what I would pay. They are probabally paying less. So ~$100 profit to cut a hose (1 minute), and crimp 2 ends on (2 minutes each).

Making $100 for all of 5 minutes of work:confused2:

I apologize for ranting if you think this is acceptable. But I certainly do not. It is called price gouging. Because they are the only hydraulic hose shop in that town, and a lot of factories and farmers on the outskirts. So when someone usually needs a hose, they cannot afford to wait the 2 days and just pay the gouging. But it still aint right. Since I can buy the hose online for $37 + shipping, I would have expected (and accepted) something in the 50-60 dollar range. But certainly not $117

I certainly don't like paying high prices for hoses, but when I've replaced hoses on my LB75B TLB, the OEM New Holland hoses are the only thing I want. They are always the perfect length and have the proper ORFS fittings on each end. The part number of the hose is even stamped on the face of the connectors so I know I'm ordering the right hose. Of course, you are talking about a separate issue since you were specifying both hose and fittings and just having them made to your specs. Like you, I think I'd have looked for a better deal online or somewhere else. To make higher prices feasible, you have to offer me something special or some added value. In your case they didn't even have the hose you wanted. I wouldn't burn any bridges, but I'd consider them only in an emergency for future business.

There's an IBM plant not too far from here. Of course they have security and employees have cass access badges. My step brother worked at a auto parts store just around the corner from the plant. He told me all about their pricing, you wouldn't believe the markup. When they bring a part up on the computer it gives several different prices. The lowest being cost, then the high volume garage prices, low volume, the occasional buyer, a 10% off for a good customer, full retail, and retail plus 15%. Anyway it was a standing policy to use the highest price (retail plus 15%) for anyone who had an IBM badge. The thought was that they made good money so they should pay more.

My advice is to not support that shop. I even got in the habit now of looking on the internet first so I know about what to expect. For auto parts I was only buying from Autozone and Advanced as I could see the prices on line so I knew what to expect. I hate to say it but I don't support local businesses any where near as much as I use to. The internet has made it too easy to just sit in your house, get the best price, and have it delivered to your door. Half the time the cost of gas offsets shipping charges.

Other times the local stores either don't put the effort in to find the correct parts or can't even get them. For example my GF's Hyundai needs to have the antilock brake rotors on the half shaft replaced (due to rust). Rock Auto has the whole half shaft for $40 (new, not a rebuilt). Three of the local auto parts stores can only get the half shafts without the rotor and the one that can is the one that over charges (as I said above) and gave me a price of $150 each for a rebuilt one and has to be ordered (1 week delivery plus shipping).

I like to support the local guys so when I need something today they are in business when I need them but 3x mark up is hard to swallow.

Jeez "Ben", SHILL much? Kinda gave it away on one of your other posts when you linked to a $6k hose crimper (same site) and called it "affordable"...

If you wanna ADVERTISE, maybe you should see about becoming a SPONSOR... Steve

Why would you bring up a 5 year old thread for the above comment?
