Hi Guys,

I've got an issue with the hydraulics that I thought I had resolved.
Last year I noticed that after using the tractor for an hour or so (like bush hogging) the brake pedal would go to the floor and the steering and loader would be jerky. I changed the hydraulic fluid and the filter. I also cleaned the screen at the rear by the PTO. That seemed to correct the problem until today. I spent about an hour and a half bush hogging and after about an hour noticed the brake pedal getting more travel again. It pumps up immediately and the steering and loader are now unaffected. Fluid level is fine. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Michael

Here is another post similar to yours might send him a PM and see, if he found a fix. Cannot hurt to bleed the brakes, here is how to do it.

1. Connect a clear plastic tube to the left brake bleed screw. Put the other end of tube into a bucket.
PROCEDURE:
NOTE: Two people are needed to bleed the brake system: one to operate the brake pedals and the other to open and close bleed screws.
1. Start the engine and run at slow idle to keep brake valve reservoir full of oil.
2. Pump brake pedal to obtain highest pedal position and hold. Loosen bleed screw 3/4 turn and slowly push on brake pedal. Before brake pedal completes full pedal travel, tighten bleed screw.
3. Let pedal return slowly to the top of its stroke. Continue this operation until the flow of oil in plastic tube is free of air bubbles.
4. When flow of oil is free of air bubbles hold the pedal down and tighten bleed screw.
5. Remove the plastic tube.
6. Repeat brake bleed procedure for the other brake

Hi TNcowboy1, I am new on here and am currently experiencing the same problem with my '99 5410. Did you ever find the problem out? My brakes and hydraulics are doing the same thing while mowing. Thanks in advance!

TNcowboy hasn't been on for a little over a year, but you can click on his member name and send a private message. That may get the cowboy back with some answers. ;)

Also, others will weigh in on your question too. Some more info about what you are experiencing on your 5410 will likely help.

You're right...it has been a while; sorry for that.:ashamed:
So.. the issue was corrected with a hydraulic fluid/filter change AND cleaning the screen located at the PTO. I paid extra attention to making sure the housing was clean; I even flushed it out with a little new fluid.
Turns out the screen was semi- blocked.

That took care of it!
Hope that helped.

Thanks for the reply. The issue started while driving the tractor between farms for about 30 minutes. I went to pull in the drive and didn't have brakes. Shortly after started loosing the steering. The rear end of the tractor was extremely hot, so I parked it. After shutting it down, I could hear air either sucking or blowing (not sure which) out of the dipstick tub. I went to check it the next day. Fluid was good and tractor worked fine. Started mowing and about 45 minutes in it started happening again. Shut it down with the same result.
I let it cool, and pulled the screen. Screen was clean, but the fluid was black. The fluid and filter have about 80 hours on them.
I haven't changed the filter yet, just don't want to ruin good fluid until I have the problem figured out.
With more information, any other ideas? I will change the fluid, filter and screen to see if it helps.
Thanks
Andrew

I would change the filter and would be tempted to change the fluid again as well.
Sounds exactly like what I experienced.

I haven't looked at the service manual for a while; but is there a vent for the hydraulic reservoir? Sounds like a plugged vent to me.
Let us know what it turns out to be.
