hydraulic leak, repaired, filled but no hydraulics

My Case 580K had a substantial leak on the return side of the hydraulic pump. After changing out the short rubber hose and filling the reservoir with fluid and running the engine for a little while (did not want to run it too long) the hydraulics still do not work, i.e., bucket, hoe, outriggers. Does it just take time for the air to be bled out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Does the pump perhaps need to be primed? No experience with this, just a guess.

You will need to work the hydraulics to get the air out. Move the levers and let the cylinders move in and out. That will purge the system.

If you can move the tractor and have a hill close by, just point the front end down hill and it should pick the oil back up.

The way I did it:

I used compressed air and rigged a fitting to pressurize the transmission/hydraulic oil rreservoir. This pushes the oil to the pump purging the air from the lines. I also loosen the fitting at the pump enough for it to leak slightly. This makes it easy for the air to leave the lines. I can see when the oil runs constant and tighten the fitting while holding a slight pressure on the reservoir. I've tried to prime the pump by running the engine and working valves, but it just will not work on my tractor.
