When you run wires you use wire loom to protect them from abrasion. I see the same type thing used for hydraulic line, but it is a woven sleeve.

What do you call the stuff that is used on hydraulic lines? And where is a good source for it?

Thanks.
Jeff

I refer to them as hydraulic hose covers. They protect the hoses from abrasion, UV light, environment etc. They protect the operator from potential injury due to leak and high pressure hydraulic spray. Most hydraulic suppliers/repair shops will have the covers. I also use them over chains to protect whatever I am binding down to protect the paint. I use them over straps to protect the strap from sharp edges. My local supplier has them a big as 3" diameter. My local shop applies a metal band to secure them. For my own use on hoses, I use a zip tie to hold them in place. They are not expensive and are cut off of rolls of material. I just tell them what length I need.

Hi Jeff,

The stuff that is a sleeve is usually made of kevlar. You can order/buy it on line, or get it at the larger construction equipment places. The kevlar stuff is fairly expensive. They also sell cheaper nylon sleeving, too. That's probably what Radman gets.

I have been using spiral wrap. It is used to hold wires/hoses together and provide protection. You can order online or get it, (like I do), from an electrical supply place. It is pretty inexpensive. I also wrapped the individual hoses that are exposed to abrasion/tree limbs, etc. The electrical supply house had white/clear...so my hoses are all wrapped in white/clear, but could have ordered black.

Jeff: Check Discount Hydraulics- believe I saw it there by the foot and it was pretty inexpensive.

In the hydraulic industry, we call this stuff a rooster sock.

Wayne County...I've never heard that term before. How did it get a name like that?

Didn't know it was also made of kevlar. Maybe I will wait for the carbon fiber sleeves next time. ;) The nylon covers are reasonable in price.

Hey Kenny,
I looked at Discount Hydraulic Hose. When my stuff wears out, I will order from them. Thanks for the link! Good selection and the prices look good.

Rad,
Yes, the nylon, (rooster sock...look Ma I lernt a new werd!), is the better deal since it is cheaper to replace. The kevlar is stronger and provides heat insulation, like around fires, etc. I guess if you work around that kind of thing, (firefighting) it may be worth it.

As a poor mans option have you considered using a portion of an old tire held in place by quick ties. It might not look good but may do the job.:D
