Hello long time lurker here. So I'm tossing around the idea of building a log splitter. I just had a question on the hydraulics, making sure I understand this right. If I want to have a single power source and an out-feed/firewood conveyor to be powered only when the hydraulics are not being used. ie not splitting. Id have a non spring valve plumbed after the power beyond port of the splitter valve running a hydraulic motor.

Am I correct in thinking the motor will run until I use the splitter and resume once I stop to go grab another log. Is there any down side in doing this?

Thanks

If you have another valve plumbed in down stream from the power beyond, it will work. You must remember, that the PB is also your return to tank, it just lets you plumb another valve in line under pressure. Therefore, if you are retracting, extending, or just letting the powerbeyond valve set there and do nothing, there will still be fluid flowing through it. Therefore your conveyor should run also as long as the conveyor valve is activated, but most likely it will work erractic as the splitter valve is activated

Every time you use the splitter, the hyd motor will slow down. or stop because the log splitter fluid is now going through the OUT port until you finish the split.

There are only one or two log splitter valves with PB.

1 SPOOL PRINCE AUTO CYCLE LOG SPLITTER VALVE W/PB

Will the hyd motor be running all the time?

You might be better off using a priority flow divider and send a dedicated flow to the hyd motor and the other part to the log splitter.

8/30 GPM PRINCE PRIORITY FLOW DIVIDER W/RELIEF

My reasoning is that I don't think I need the conveyor to run 100% of the time to keep ahead of me splitting. So I could just keep the conveyor valve engaged but still have 100% of my hydraulic flow to the cylinder when splitting.

"You must remember, that the PB is also your return to tank" ok I didn't know this. I though you still plumbed a return line separate from the PB.

If you have both a PB and tank line, then plumb the tank line to tank.

If you are going to use the log slitter valve as the last valve in the hyd system, then you don't need PB, and in that case. plug the PB and run the tank line to tank.

If you have another valve after the log splitter valve, then you need the PB line to run to the next valve.

The only time a PB port will go to tank is if it is the last valve in the series flow path. Then you must also run the tank line to tank.

If you are not going to use PB, then remove any PB fitting and plug the PB port and then all fluid in the valve will flow through the OUT port. One line IN one line out, and two work ports.
