Going to attempt to reintstall the PTO gears, bearings, and seals this weekend I am looking for advice on what fluid to use. I am looking for something reasonably priced that i may be able to get from walmart or advanced auto, as that is the only local stores Thanks!

Pretty much anything that says Hydraulic/Transmission. It will have names like -JD303, HyTrans, J10A, J14A, J20A,B,C,D, J27A but they pretty much all say "Hydraulic Transmission Oil". There are also dealers on here that have used regular ATF for many years.

What Aaron said. If you have a TSC near you you can buy % gallon buckets there for less than $40 on sale or certain brands. AgriSuppy has some of the cheapest prices i have seen but there are not many of those around so the chances of you being near one are not high. But yea just look for "Universal Tractor Transmission/Hydraulic fluid" the one were always told to look for is the JD303 spec thats the one folks always refer to but its like a 40 year old spec, so usually anyfluid will superceede that spec and therefore somewhere it will be listed on the bottle. Transmission fluid cant be cheaper unless you have some or something? Even at walmart thier brand is like $10-12 a gallon i think? the last 5 gallon bucket of "hrdraulic / transmission" fluid i bought was at agrisupply (warren brand) and i think i paid like $34.99 for it. The time before that i think i bought Accel from TSC (now i think they have Extreme?) and it was like $39.99 for 5 gallons./

Anyone had experience with the Super S Super Trac 303 transmission/hydraulic fluid sold by Tractor Supply? It is on sale through Memorial Day for $24.99 for a 5-gallon bucket.

You need the "universal" hydraulic transmission fluid that they mention.

I bought a pail of it. I did not realize the temperature requirements at the time until I saw this thread. It is warm now so there are no issues. Anything is better than the creamy stuff it in there right now. I guess some water got in there somehow. I just bought the tractor and I am catching up on some maintenance issues. If I have to I will change it again before it gets cold. It was cheap so it will work well as a flush.

303 means you are simply operating in 'old school' mode. It meets Yanmar's original specs when the tractor was built - but they also specify to warm up for 5 minutes before moving the tractor.

I noted that Smitty's data sheet says useful working range for 303 starts at 32 degrees, and the point where it won't pour is zero Fahrenheit. If you don't need to operate in sub-freezing weather, it is sufficient. If you do need to occasionally - just warm it up like they did back in the day.
