Hey guys. LONG time reader but rookie poster. i recently bought a 1965 Massey Ferguson 165 with a FEL that runs off of aftermarket hydraulics using a pump that is driven via belt off of the fan belt pulley. Given its age, the hydraulics are pretty strong in spite of a few small leaks that I'm in the process of addressing. My problem is this.....when I tilt the bucket BACK, the pump seems to drag/bind and the belt squeals something awful. I can actually see the fan blades slow and the pulley wheel on the hydraulic pump as well. It will still tilt, for the most part, even with a pretty good load, but not always. Also, it will still do it when the bucket is empty. It ONLY does it when I tilt the bucket back/up. Not when I tilt it down (to empty), or when I raise or lower the entire loader. I keep the reservoir full of fluid, both the belts involved (motor/fan/alternator belt AND pump belt) are in good shape and tight. i just can't understand why it only does it tilting the bucket back. Is it a cylinder problem? Possessed with a demon? Any and all advice is appreciated, and thanks for years of answering my questions and not knowing it.

If you have QD's on the loader, make sure they are not causing a restriction so as to cause the relief valve to operate and put a load on the fan belt.

Maybe switch out a glazed fan belt or add belt dressing to the belt.

Hi J_J... I assume you are talking quick disconnects? The loader doesn't have them. I don't think there's anything quick about disconnecting this old loader! Teach me if you can.....why would it just put a load on it in that particular motion only?

One way to start this is to determine if it is mechanical or hydraulic. I would disconnect the one end of the tilt cylinders and see what happens.

If it still happens it is hydraulic. Quick couplers would be the first thing to check but you said you don't have them. Could be a bad hose internally. Some valves have a load holding feature which may be the cause. (need detailed valve info to help) I wouldn't expect the unattached cylinders to move in unison, but if one more easy and one hard you can narrow it down even farther.

If the system works fine unpinned something is binding up. Could be a bad bushing or bent parts.

Put a hyd gage in the circuit and see what the pressure is with no load. Should be very low.

Hey Zebra... So what you're saying is to disconnect the end of the cylinders that attach to the bucket and work the remote, and if it's smooth then it's going to be mechanical, which I hope it is. If it isn't, I'll be back on here. In a foul mood.

Buy some belt dressing (kind of a wax stick) and carefully rub it on the belt while it is operating.

I had a snow plow that squealed from time to time and dressing cured it every time.

LOL, contact cement will also fix many squealing belts.
