The u-joints are bad on the hyd, pump driveshaft on my ford backhoe 555. Is it possible to remove the shaft without removing the baffle plate that goes around the driveshaft? I have been studying it and cant see how the plate comes off without removing the hydraulic cooler. Once I remove the bolts from the crankshaft, will it move forward enough to make enough room to pull the shaft out from the back?

I have a 555B. It does not have the baffle plate like your 555, but when I recently tried to remove my shaft, it cannot be done without removing the cooler lines at the bottom of the radiator. You have enough room to disconnect it from the front pulley and can get it sideways to the point is almost comes out, but the cooler lines keep you from getting that extra "1/2" to complete the job.

I don't have the cooler lines, is that because it is a manual tranny? So a piece of cake , right?

Can't save with total certainty, but it is only about a twenty minute job to remove the 4 bolts so give it a try.
