Hello everyone!

I bought this hydraulic pump, with accumulator. Is there a way to connect this pump to PTO to make a dump trailer and will it be powerful enough? It was used by a logging company. Also, how do I find out the flow rate? I don't know much about it. If you do, please tell me. Thank you.

That pump is probably turning at about 1750, or 3400 rpm.

If you used it on a PTO output, you would have to gear it up to the required pump rpm.

I have a similar unit and it is 3 phase power.

If you can get it running as is, then put the output hose in a bucket and measure the flow rate.

If you can fill a 5 gal bucket in 1 min, then you have a 5 GPM flow rate.

-----------------------------------30 sec--------------------10 GPM ---------.

If the accumulator is working correctly, it can give you a burst of hyd fluid even when the power is off.

The rpm for the motor is on a label on the motor, and whether it is single phase or 3 phase.

John S. Barnes was purchased by the Haldex corporation years ago and more recently Haldex was purchased by another company.

try calling 815 - 398-4400 and they should be able to provide the operating specs on that pump.

Thank you for your reply. I tried timing today, I got half a gallon in one minute. When I was closing the valve, the pressure started increasing and the oil flow significantly increased. It looks like accumulator is working because when I close the valve to build pressure, half of the accumulator is warm and the other half is cold. What's the correct way to check? Checking the pump flow rate as is or when the pressure is built up?

Here is more close up of accumulator specifications:

One challenge you may have connecting to a PTO shaft is the pump orientation has the shaft vertical while your PTO is horizontal. Instead of creating a linkage with a gearbox to make the 90 degree change, it might be cheaper & easier to change the motor to a DC motor you can run from a battery or simply use the same motor it came with, (if it works), and use a power inverter connected to your tractor batteries to power it. Unless you are using several times a day several days a week, staying electrical would make sense to me. If you stay with the motor it came with, you might want to make a dust cover to use when you are not dumping. This was a great find. If you stay electric motor, use quick disconnects & have an location on the trailer where you could mount it that would be easy to remove it from, it would also work great to power a press. Just shift it to where you need it - trailer or press.

A hyd pump can be mounted in any position. Most are mounted horizontal.

The only requirement is that the pump be connected to a turning shaft and the suction tube be in the fluid.

The driving motor on this setup is probably an AC motor.

If that pump is about a 5 GPM, it will take about 10 HP to drive it. AC in shop maybe, DC on trailer probably not.

While it is true a hydraulic pump can be mounted in any orientation, if he plans on keeping the same reservoir setup he has pictured, the pump is in a vertical configuration.
