i am building a towable backhoe and was woundering if anyone know what one

of this pumps would work Gear | Pumps | Hydraulics | Princess Auto there is
4 2'' x18'' strock tie rod cylinders rated at 2500psi

thanks very much for any replys

what kind of engine are you going to use you will also need a lovejoy coupler to join the pump to the engine

This is very similar to the pump that I am using on my Power-Trac for my steering and lift. I can lift 1200 lbs with 2 in cyl. You can use just about any pimp that will turn and provide pressure. It all depends on what force and speed you want to make things work. It takes a certain HP to turn a pump at rated value.

im planing on using a honda gc160 (5.5hp) engine

I don't have a two stage on ANYTHING I have ever made and you sure as **** would want one on a hoe. A two stage doesn't give you any more pressure for the horsepower,it just gives you more flow. They are just two pumps in one body.. One pump is high volume/low pressure and the other is low volume/high pressure. The HVLP half moves the cylinder fast and cuts out when it senses resistance. Then the LVHP side takes over to meet the load.
A two stage on a hoe would probably result in a very hard to control safely piece of equipment. You need predictability from your controls.

I agree a two stage pump on a hoe would be suicide. I suggest 2.25" to 2.5" cylinders and a 5 - 6 GPM flow rate pump. Plan on a system relief pressure of 2300 PSI. Using the hydraulic calculator at the bottom of the web page indicates the need for a 8 HP engine for 5 gpm and 10 HP for 6 GPM (@2300 psi). It's always best to design a system based on actual proven field calculations and not leave anything to chance. After all, your going to put allot of time, $$$ and effort into your hoe fabrication, might as well have it work right.

Do you have your plans yet? What do they say?, or are you designing yourself? how about steel? got it rounded up?

The Cad Digger plans of built and prov-en models have been around a while. Any defects for them probably has been worked out by now. If you try and go from scratch, you have a lot of work ahead of you. If you purchase prov-en plans, you save yourself time, headaches, and money, unless you already have the metal, but understand that the metal has to hold up to the force of the hydraulics, and if done wrong. you end up with a boom or something in the shape of a pretzel. Not really that bad, but you know what I mean.

The main reason two stage pumps are used is for cycle time when no load situations are present. It would be a very slow operation without high volume low pressure and the balance of the two features. If you are using small sized cyl you will have less power out of the machine. The controll valve has pressure regulation built into the valve. The smooth operation of any hydraulic system is a learned feel that you develope from using the machine. I guess I am too accustomed to commerical grade equipment having worked 45 years building and repairing doziers loaders fork liffts cranes. The two stage pump gives you larger capacity hydraulic system while using less HP.

I had to replace most of the hydraulics on my 14HP Power King FEL and used the Haldex 7gpm pump off of a belt. They work very well and were very inexpensive compared to some of the others. Of course now that I got the pump working good I need to rebuild the cylinders:). The nice thing I like is that if I wanted to I could use them as a hydraulic motor.

Another nice thing about belt drive is the cheap ability to change pulleys. Had a buddy who built a splitter and had plenty of speed but a little pressure would stall the engine. He was all set to buy another pump when I told him to put a smaller pulley on the engine. Even though it slowed the cylinder down a bit,it was still fast enough for him and definitely cheaper than another pump.

I looked at the CADDIGGER plans. Do you have any approximate idea of about what parts would cost to build this for my craftsman?

Thanks
Mike

Most of the guys I have talked to have at least a couple grand tied up in towables...

I believe that some of the CAD planes have a 3 pt design. You should be able to obtain the large metal locally, and then acquire the valves, cylinders, hoses, etc. The cost would be variable depending on your scrounging abilities. Some people can just look at something and copy the item. Most of us have to have some kind of plan.
