The more I think about things to do with/to my Power Trac, the more I am impressed with the vastness of my ignorance of hydraulic systems. Although I have read some of the threads here, and am starting to pick up some of the lingo, I would appreciate a recommendation to a good basic text covering the types of systems used in tractors. Hydraulics for Dummies would be nice, if it exists. I can easily calculate the force on a piston from area and psi, but have no idea, for instance, why I don't have to bleed a double acting cylinder when I plug into the auxiliary pto on the Power Trac. Where does the air go? (See what I mean about the vastness of ignorance?)
Someone told me John Deere used to have such a book. Anyone?

Try http://www.deere.com/deerecom/_Company+Info/Publications/John+Deere+Publishing/service.htm Its the John Deere Web site, it was a little hard to find but if the link doesn't work, look under their publication services. Our high school Ag department has it and its pretty good. I just recently heard about an Army publication ( FM?-???) that's downloadable, got a copy but can't find the link right now. It was either in "Compact Tractor Board" or the "Yesterday's Tractor" board during the last month under hydraulic's heading if I recall correctly. If I find it I will post the address. It was pretty good with the basic theory. Hope this helps. I was

Here's a link to the Army document on the hydraulics:

Halsey & Kevin:
Thanks for you immediate help. I downloaded the Army manual, and from the table of contents it looks to be exactly what I need to get started. I'll also chase down a copy of the John Deere book, unless, of course, the Army manual makes me an instant expert.

Charlie - The best books I've seen can be purchased here. Not inexpensive, but worth what you pay for them.

Thanks. I'll mark the site pending actually reading the Army manual.

Charlie,

Another decent book is by Intertec Publishing @ most farm/ag stores for $3.50... Basic Hydraulics & Troubleshooting... about 35 pages... reprinted articles from the mid-'70's...

John Deere publishing has a few hydraulic books for around $30/35... I've haven't seen them, but if they are anything like their service manuals... they should be first class with charts/pictures/color/readability...for every level...

If youve got yourself a good dealer then pick a project and talk to them about how to get it done right. Nothing like learning by doing. Ask the dealer what parts manufacturers he recommends. See if you can get hold of their catalogs because theres lots of good stuff in them too.

Thanks a lot. The Army manual has answered a few basic questions. I'll need at least another book to start installing my own systems on the Power Trac. I'm not as fond of explosions as I was asw a kid.

Unfortunately, I don't have a dealer, and no local vendor of custom hydraulic stuff that I know about yet. There must be someone. I need catalogs, and hope to find someone who has some experience with the hardware.
