Hydraulic Reservoir for Logsplitter

/ Hydraulic Reservoir for Logsplitter #11
my friend built one in HS, he added a baffle in the middle parallel to the long sides, this made a river bed for the hyd oil to flow and cool off b4 being sucked back up.

also bolted on used rear hubs from a front wheel drive car onto ends of reservoir for tires

Welcome to TBN JuHaa, I hope you continue to post.

That's a nice project. Have you thought about putting a 4way wedge on?

Thanks.

This is first time I have discussion in english about such a tehcnical subject. There are many quit strange words, but i have a dictionary helping me:)

Well I'm going to continue reading and writing in TBN. Same time I'm learning some english.

About this logsplitter and its valve:

Have you thought about putting a 4way wedge on?

There is 4way wedge. Its 2way until you lift it up by pulling the pedal with leg. Then its 4 way wedge. If I understood right 4 way wedge is "blade" that cuts a log in 4 pieces?

If I understand it correctly, the vee shaped main support holds the wood centered so you don't have to. And the cylinder, once started, moves the ram foward all the way to the end knife before it trips the valve to neutral.

First I have to say that I'm not going to explain how whole system works in english, too hard:) Instead I'm going to take more pictures and maybe even video and explain something about them. Farmerford: You understood nearly right. But this valve is not normal valve. There is system (inside valve) that locks the club (not sure is this right word) so the ram goes forward. There is also second speciality in this valve: no neutral position. Inside the valve is some kind of spring that puls the club over the neutral position. The groove is shaped as V so it centeres automatically wood.

In one picture you can see those both limiters (Those two triangels). So system works like this: I push the slide, ram starts moving, splits the log, goes nearly end (depending how limiter is set), changes direction, and stops when it's nearly end (denpend also about limiter). This is very good system, but atleast here in finland it's a little bit illeagel, because it's possible to put ones fingers between log and wedge.

One question: is there any mechanism to keep the ram from jumping out of the vee slot? Seems like its weight would keep it in the groove in most cases. But what if the end of the wood is cut at an angle so that the top of the ram strikes the wood before the bottom of the ram strikes? Does the ram tend to rise up out of the groove?

Yes there is. I will take a picture in couple of days and you will see...

JuHaa:

Thanks for the response. I am looking forward to learning more about your splitter.

JuHaa:

Now I understand! Thanks for the pictures.

That is a well designed machine and you obviously gave it a lot of thought before starting. If I get the time I might try to build one like it this winter.

Thanks again for sharing with us.
