I bought the top link from Brian and Fit Rite and he was great to work with and the product works well. I am wanting to add a hydraulic side link, but can't swing the ~$600 price tag. Anybody put one of the together from scratch? How does it work/what did it cost?

I made my own using a surplus cylinder off e-bay...I cut the existing ends off the cylinder and welded the ends from a striped out manual side link...

FWIW you do not need much stroke for a tilt link to be effective...

You can buy hydraulic side link cylinders for $180-250 or so. If that's in your budget, start shopping around online -- plenty of options. Figure another $20-40 for hoses depending on the hookup arrangement on the tractor, and maybe another $10-20 for fittings.

For example: here's one that fits my L3200 perfectly:

A-SLH01, Ford / New Holland, Hydraulic Side Link Cylinder

They have a couple other sizes on that site. I bought my top link there, and it shipped right away from a regional warehouse so I got it the next day. Has worked great so far. That was about $190 and I spent another $35 for custom made hoses, plus $5 for a can of Kubota orange spray paint to dress it up (comes primer black).
