Hello

I am currently making a horizontal logsplitter with a loglift. Now i have some questions about the hydraulic tank. I want to use an old butane gas tank off +- 45 litres. How can i safely use this tank without exploding while cutting in it ? My next question is how much litres off hydraulic fluid i need to put in this tank. I use a 4 inch bore 20 inch stroke cylinder en a 3 inch bore 8 inch stroke (lift) cylinder with a 16 gallons/m pump.

Somebody know this?

Thanks :)

45 liters is almost 12 gal. So for your log splitter, don't cut it up, use it as is. Fill anywhere from 8 to 10 gal of hyd fluid.

Do not put your suction holes on or near the bottom. You might cut a hole in the bottom for cleaning and draining. You should have a good moisture resistant filtered cap.

If you just have to cut it, fill it with water and dish soap.

Rinse, let dry, add some ATF in it, slosh it around and drain. Then fill with your choice of hyd fluid.

You might purge it with CO2, or use exhaust gas to fill tank and expel flammable gas.

You might consider one of these electronic sniffers to detect any gas.

I would be careful welding on an old tank that contained flammable gases/liquids. Search 'welding tanks' and do some research so you dont blow something up. I've heard fill the tank with water several times so you purge out the gases.
They say 1 gallon of tank space for every gpm of pump you have. Do some researching on here and you're bound to get smarter-it happens to me every day!
